24. LANGUAGE EXERCISES: Make a chart for the nine parts of speech./2 Language/Illustration
On a piece of cardstock (ask your Mom to give you a piece) make an easy to read copy of the rhyme below. Punch holes for your binder on the right and left sides of the cardstock, so you can always see it when you're working. Ask Mom if you can use markers. Hint: Make a practice copy first using a pencil on a plain piece of paper. Then make another using markers and cardstock. For each part of speech, use a different colored marker, so you can see that each one is different. You could even use a ruler and draw rectangles around each one. Use some ideas to decorate the page that you might find in Mom's book or from some of the illustrations in Igraine's book (I like the way the author/illustrator drew the frames on pp. viii - ix)

Nine Parts of Speech
Three little words you often see
Are ARTICLES, a, an, and the.
A NOUN'S the name of anything;
As school or garden, hoop or swing.
ADJECTIVES tell the kind of noun;
As great, small, pretty, white, or brown.
Instead of nouns the PRONOUNS stand;
Her face, his face, our arms, your hand.
VERBS tell of something being done;
To read, count, sing, laugh, jump, or run.
How things are done the ADVERBS tell;
As slowly, quickly, ill, or well.
CONJUNCTIONS join the words together;
As men and women, wind or weather.
The PREPOSITION stands before
A noun, as in or through a door.
The INTERJECTION shows surprise;
As oh! how pretty! ah! how wise!
The whole are called nine parts of speech,
Which reading, writing, speaking teach.

25. Bonus Question:
On page 67 at the top of the page it was said that the old Baroness held her court of law under the spreading branches of the great linden tree. Why would a Baroness hold a court of law in medieval times?/2 Inference
(Hint: Read this - This was a court/system called the feudal system - basically there was the lord/Baron/Baroness, his vassals (or servants), and the manor/fiefs. The manor was the entire estate. The fiefs were small farms manned by the vassals. Often "owned" by the vassals but then sold to the lord for protection against enemies, namely the vikings.)
