Welcome to Highway Cats

First Reading of Highway Cats

Read pages 1-3 silently. Then read it aloud to yourself and listen to your voice. When you read aloud, make your voice sound like the character who is speaking.

In the Character section of your binder, list the two characters who are speaking on these three pages. Describe the characters physical appearance.

Then answer these questions in your Q & A Section:
(use complete sentences)

1. What is this writing style?
a. a paragraph
b. an essay
c. a play
d. a song

2. Where are they?

3. What does Mayor Blunt need?

4. What does Farley suggest?

5. What do you think is the biggest issue (problem) here?

6. What do you predict they will do?

Now, read Chapter One, pages 5-15. Read it again, this time out loud and make your voice the same as the characters' voices.

1. In the character section of your binder, begin listing the characters' names as they are introduced in the story. Write a bried description of each.

2. Where are they?

3. Which character is the first to speak? And what is his first problem?

4. Is this fiction or non-fiction. Give your reason in a complete sentence.

5. What did Shredder see in the road median? What did Murray bet?

6. Who won the bet and why?

7. Where are they going at the end of the chapter and why?

8. Put these in correct order:

Murray makes a bet with Shredder
Everyone heads for the dumpster at the mall.
Shredder can't find any food on the road.
Murray loses his bet
Kittens were mysteriously lucky crossing the road
